Well, hello, darlings! It’s Doris here, your friendly neighbourhood TikTok expert. Now, you might be thinking, “What does an 80-year-old woman know about TikTok?” But let me tell you, I’ve been all over this app like a rash. When I’m not having a nice sit down with a cup of tea, I’m scrolling and spotting trends faster than you can say, “Don’t forget your hashtags!”
So, put the kettle on, get comfy, and let’s get cracking with my tried-and-true tips to grow your TikTok following. And yes, I promise to keep it as painless as possible!
1. Make Your Profile Look Lovely
Your TikTok profile is like a window display at Marks & Spencer. Make it look inviting, so people want to pop in for a nosey. Use a nice, clear photo of yourself (no blurry nonsense), and write a little bio that tells people what you’re all about. Something simple and charming – like, "Sharing life’s little joys" or "Keeping you young at heart, one TikTok at a time." It’s not rocket science, love.
2. Jump on Those Trending Sounds
Ah, trends! In my day, we had disco, but these days, it’s all about the latest sound on TikTok. Stick a popular sound on your video (even if you’ve muted it). It gives you a cheeky boost with the algorithm. Just don’t get too carried away – we don’t want you ending up in TikTok jail because you used something daft.
3. Tell a Good Story
People love a story, don’t they? I know I do. Whether it’s that time you locked yourself out in your dressing gown or how you found the perfect cuppa, share those little moments that make you, well, you! Being genuine is half the battle – no one wants to follow someone who’s as exciting as damp cardboard.
4. Post Regularly, Like the Church Bells on Sunday
Consistency is key. You can’t just throw up a video once in a blue moon and expect miracles. Post a little something every day if you can. Don’t fret if it’s not perfect – trust me, most of TikTok has no idea what they’re doing either. Experiment with times, see when your lovely viewers are most active, and stick with it.
5. Light Up Your Videos Like Blackpool Illuminations
There’s no excuse for gloomy videos. Get yourself a nice bit of lighting – natural light is best, but if you’re filming at midnight (goodness knows why), invest in one of those ring lights. Nobody wants to squint at their screen trying to work out what on earth you’re showing them. Keep it bright, love!
6. Chat with Your Followers
Now, don’t be one of those snooty creators who never replies. If someone’s left you a comment, give them a little reply. Start a conversation! People love a chat, and the more you engage, the more the TikTok algorithm thinks, “Ooh, they’re popular, aren’t they?” Plus, who doesn’t like a bit of social interaction? It’s better than talking to the plants.
7. Join In With Challenges (But No Dangerous Ones!)
TikTok loves a good challenge, and joining in can give your videos a bit of extra oomph. Just make sure it’s something safe – none of this silly dancing on moving cars nonsense! Find a challenge that makes sense for you, give it a whirl, and make sure to add the right hashtag so people know you’re in on the fun.
8. Catch Attention Right Away – Don’t Waffle!
You’ve got about three seconds to grab someone’s attention. Start with something punchy like, “You won’t believe what happened at Tesco today…” or “Here’s a tip you didn’t know you needed.” Keep it short and snappy – nobody’s hanging around if you’re as slow as a Sunday driver.
9. Team Up with Other Creators
A bit of collaboration never hurt anyone! Find creators who do similar things to you, and see if you can work together. It’s a lovely way to meet new folks and show up on their followers’ feeds. Plus, it’s good fun! Just don’t get roped into anything too fancy – keep it simple, like a duet or a reaction.
10. Check Your Analytics (That’s Just a Fancy Word for Numbers)
I know, I know, it sounds awfully technical, but trust me, looking at your analytics isn’t that scary. TikTok will tell you which videos are popular, what times are best, and even where your viewers are from! Use it to see what’s working and what’s a bit naff, and tweak as you go along. If I can do it, so can you!
Growing your following on TikTok isn’t about gimmicks; it’s about being genuine, having a bit of fun, and sharing things that make people smile. Stick with these tips, give it time, and remember: it’s meant to be enjoyable, not a chore!
